SWEET SOUNDS OF ST LUCIA -
Compact disc now available (Postage Price US$15.00)
St Lucia folk Music is something that "Rameau" Poleon has always been exposed to. He was encouraged by his father to learn to play the violin at an early age.
He has proven himself to be an adroit folk musician and exponent of the violin. Having won the "Best Violinist" competition in St Lucia for two consecutive years, he along with the "Mount Gallion Folk Group" has represented St Lucia regionally and internationally on cultural exchanges and has been well received wherever he has performed.
Most of the music on this CD is representative of St Lucias "Traditional Folk Music", which is of European origin. For example, the Polka and Pique Waltz, the Italian Polka and the Quadrille. Yet, one cannot escape the persistent presence of the African rhythm in the percussion.
Although the Moolala and the La Comette are European-influenced they are indigenous to St Lucia, the latter being derived from the French Minuet. The Grande Ronde and the Faci are also indigenous to St Lucia.
"Rameau" Poleon is ably supported by the Mount Gallion Folk Group, which was managed by Eric Adley, who also played the drum and was the groups vocalist. Eric who has since passed on will long be remembered for his contribution to the development of this art form.
Also featured is the music of "Quiet Fire" led by David Elwin with their indigenous Folk Music. Connie Marshalls enticing and soothing saxophone renditions will tug at your heart strings. All in this CD is a must for lovers of indigenous island music. A perfect souvenir for St Lucians living overseas as well as visitors to our shores.
You have a choice; either relax and enjoy the traditional folk music of St Lucia or step on the floor and try some of the folk dances. You're sure to have lots of fun.
