SIGHTSEEING

MORNE COUBARIL ESTATE
Located on the south-western coast, and nestled between the legendary Petit Piton, the Sulphur Springs and the Diamond Falls, Morne Coubaril Estate recalls the 1600's and the plantocracy era in St. Lucia. Originally part of a 2000-acre estate commissioned by King Louis XVI of France, it was cultivated successfully in the 1700's, 1800's and early 1900's, but the property remained unattended and relatively overgrown in recent times. Since 1994, when the plantation was developed into its present form, this 250-acre estate has become one of St. Lucia's fastest growing heritage attractions and is a "must see" for those interested in the cultural heritage of the region.
Especially noteworthy is that Morne Coubaril is not merely a tourist attraction, but a working venture where copra and cocoa are produced, and sheep, horses and pigs are reared in the same manner as they were in early 17th century. This means that visitors can experience the wonders of this earlier time in an authentic, fully active plantation setting. Many a visitor has been fascinated at the mode of transportation on and around the estate (either by foot or by way of a mule carriage) as well as the horse-powered "Sugar Cane Mill", the seventeenth century methods of cocoa processing, the production of local sweets such as "Cocoa Sticks" and "Tamarind Balls" and much, much more!

Visitors are always welcome to take a stroll through the tropical flowers and fauna or even view more of the estate by horse-back. A vist to the Coubaril Restaurant & Bar is a perfect way to end this enjoyable experience!

BANANA BOAT SUNCARE TIPS

While exploring our island or just "cooling out" on the beach, remember to protect your skin by following these simple guidelines from Banana Boat:
Do's and don'ts
  • Use a sun protection whenever your skin is exposed to the sun.
  • Avoid our midday sun when the rays are strongest.
  • Tan gradually and safely. Always use a higher SPF in the early stages of your tan.
Other Sun Tips
  • Avoid perfumes and heavy colognes during sun exposure. These products are generally alcohol based and will only intensify the sun's burning rays
  • facial skin is very sensitive, and is usually exposed to the sun for longer periods. Use a special face formular for proper care.
Did you Know?
  • With correct protection the sun provides important health benefits. Too litle sun results in depression and vitamin D deficiency ( I think we in St. Lucia can all agree with the first of these facts!!)
All good advice from the Sun Care Experts so whilst here...
...Get on the boat!

RUM

BOUNTY RUM...... THE SPIRIT OF ST. LUCIA
This clean and mellow rum outsells all other brands in St. Lucia by approximately eight to one. The St. Lucians say: "...superior when it comes to avoiding a hangover" and this virtue alone should classify it as one of the "finest of the Caribbean". Well, you know what they say: "The proof of the pudding......"
Bounty is produced by the only Rum Distillery on the Island: St. Lucia Distillers, located in the lush Roseau Valley. This area, which used to be the centre of sugar cane production on the island, is now the largest banana producing valley.
Strangely then, the Distillery sits among bananas, now the main crop of the island. The remnants of a bygone era can be seen as the island's main sugar factory, now derelict, joins the Distillery. Nearby, still standing, is an old slave hut.
For visitors interested in history, culture and the making of fine rums and rum liqueurs, a Distillery tour is a must. There you will see the process of fermentation, distillation and the aging of rums in barrels for future blending.
A sampling of a variety of rums and rum liqueurs is, of course, the highlight of the tour for many.
The distillery also provides visitors with special discounts on their purchases as part of its welcome.
For more information call: St. Lucia Representative Services Ltd (758) 452-8232

JAZZ FESTIVAL

Every year since its inception in 1992, thousands of jazz enthusiasts flock to beautiful St. Lucia in May, to soak up the combination of sun, sea, sand and sax. Heralded as one of the best Jazz festivals in the world by the North American entertainment network "E", and ranking favourably against its sister festivals in Montreal and New Orleans, the St. Lucian event offers a unique blend of grass roots jazz, contemporary and crossover rhythms as well as R&B and Caribbean jazz.

Over the years, international greats such as Gearge Benson, Regina Belle, Al Jarreau, Arturo Sandoval, Ashford & Simpson, Jeffery Osbourne, Roy Hargrove, Najee, The Neville Brothers as well as St. Lucia's own ace saxoponist Luther Francois and guitarist Ronald "Boo" Hinkson have wowed audiences with their scintillating performances.
The jazz venues are varied. Late night club shows are generally held in the entertainment lounges of the premier hotels; lunchtime Jazz concerts are in Derek Walcott Square, Castries. But of all the venues, the open air daytime weekend shows at pigeon Island Landmark provides the greatest thrills. The venue offers the unique and picturesque setting and breathtaking ambience that is St. Lucia. The grand stage overlooks the Caribbean sea, the performances starts shortly after midday and last until well after sunset.
The 1997 St. Lucia Jazz Festival was just as exciting. All of the island's hotels and guest houses were fully booked during the festival, so you may want to make your reservations early to ensure that you do not miss out on the 1998 Festival. The friendly people of this sun paradise await your arrival to the Premier Jazz festival of the Caribbean beween May 1998.
