April is Youth Month and the Ministry of Education Human Resource Development Youth & Sports has once again put together a week-long calendar of activities to commemorate the event.
This year, Youth Month will be observed under the theme "Togetherness Through Voluntary Service" in keeping with the United Nations declaration of 2001 as the International Year of the Volunteer. The stated objectives of the month are to promote the role of youth in national development, to provide youth with avenues for self-expression and to build national awareness on matters affecting the youth.
The planning committee expects to achieve this with a programme that spans art, politics, religion, the environment and sports. Events began with the "Dedication of Youth Month" on April 1st, which saw churches from several denominations dedicating their April 1st service to the youth.
Other major events on the calendar are a Youth and Arts Exhibition, an Afternoon of Fitness Fun, a Chat with Cabinet, Global Youth Service Day, a Performing Arts Festival and a Youth Parliament. The National Youth Rally, which has become the focal point of activities, will be held on April 29th.
