LOCAL SAILOR GOES TO YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

Olympian
Jamie Peterkin, the Chef de Mission for the Games.
Tuesday July 27, 2010 --With
only three weeks to go until the start of the first ever Youth Olympic
Games, St. Lucia’s five selected young athletes are busy preparing so
that they can perform at their best.
The
inaugural Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from 14th
to 26th August 2010. Every National Olympic Committee has been invited
to send at least four athletes, who must be in the 14 to 18 years age
range. Saint Lucia will send five athletes, runner Rosen Daniel, boxer
Lyndel Marcellin, swimmers Siona Huxley and Julien Brice, and sailor
Stephanie Devaux-Lovell.
Stephanie is an experienced sailor, a member of the Saint Lucia Yacht
Club. She won both the Optimist Class and Laser Class Sailing
Championships at the recent 4th Annual Championship Regatta hosted by
the St. Lucia Yacht Club in mid-June.
Although Stephanie is only fourteen, she has been sailing for almost
seven years, since she was eight years old.
She
lists her greatest achievement to date as having competed in the recent
North American Optimist Championships in Canada. She placed mid fleet
for the majority of the regatta with the exception of some races where
she placed in the top 20 of the fleet.
Stephanie loves sailing with a passion because “I feel like no matter
what’s going on in my life either good or bad I can turn to sailing and
I forget all about everything and just focus on the present where it’s
just me, my boat, the wind and the water and nothing else matters. I
love the feeling of wind flying across my face, water gliding underneath
my boat and feeling one with Mother Nature! Stress Free.”
Her
goal in sailing has always been to attend the Olympics and now that she
is going to the Youth Olympics in Singapore she definitely feels more
confident that she can achieve her dream.
Her
goals for the Youth Olympics are to place in the top half of the fleet
in every race she participates in, and to come back home having made new
friends from all over the world. Stephanie is looking forward to
experiencing the cultures from all the different countries, sailing
against the best young sailors in the world, and living in the Olympic
village.
A
student at the Saint Joseph’s Convent Secondary School, Stephanie will
enter form four after returning from Singapore. She has become adept at
balancing her school work with family life, tennis and sailing, but the
heavy schedule leaves little time for a social life.
She
is currently training six days each week in preparation for the Youth
Olympics, and coach Max Todd has her going through various exercises,
from working the start line, to extreme fitness drills, one of which is
called the Gutbuster, and a whole variety of drills to work on reaction
time, wind awareness etc. Coach Todd has been helping Stephanie to work
on analysis of external conditions and factors.
Stephanie will be accompanied on the trip to Singapore by her role-model
and mother, Monique Devaux-Lovell, who will act as chaperone for the two
female athletes on the team. Team St. Lucia will be headed by Olympian
Jamie Peterkin, the Chef de Mission for the Games.
The Games will offer a full programme of cultural and educational
activities for the young athletes, incorporating five themes: Olympism
and Olympic values, skills development, well-being and healthy
lifestyle, social responsibility and expression through digital media.
Twenty six sports will be featured in the Youth Olympics including:
Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling,
Diving, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey,
Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table
Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and
Wrestling. It is estimated that 3,600 young athletes will participate in
the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.
